CHAPTER 106 - A HEART TORN IN TWO ---- CAPÍTULO 106 - UN CORAZÓN PARTIDO

In Algeciras the news came by radio and television, and at Villa Claire it was little Charlotte — who had not gone to school that day, having woken with a temperature and a sore throat — who heard it first, and who leapt out of bed and came down the stairs to tell her mother, with all the urgency of one bearing something important.

'Mummy, the Beatles have got married in Gibraltar.'

'Only one of the Beatles, darling,' said Rowena. 'Now come along, back to bed with you, or you'll only make yourself worse.'

'The most famous one,' insisted Charlotte, with the crushing logic of her eight years.

'The shaggy one?' asked Aunt Charlotte. 'So that is what Gibraltar has come to — hairy hippies flying in to marry Chinese girls. How perfectly dreadful.'

Rowena could not help smiling. 'She isn't Chinese, she's Japanese,' she corrected her aunt by marriage.

'It's all the same to me,' pronounced Aunt Charlotte.

That evening, before dinner, Andrew rang his father.

'Have you heard about John Lennon?'

'Yes, I've heard,' said John.

'And what do you make of it?'

'I suppose,' said John, 'that if John Lennon has chosen Gibraltar to get married in, there must be some reason for it... At any rate we have made the international press for something good, for once.'

Andrew laughed. And John laughed too, caught by his son's laughter, before going off to tell Margot about it.

************

—Sí, me he enterado —dijo John.
