Dear General Hopkins,
I write to inform you that Her Majesty The Queen has been graciously pleased to approve your appointment as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Gibraltar, in succession to General Sir Dudley Ward, upon his retirement from the post.
Your appointment will take effect from the date to be agreed mutually between yourself and the outgoing Governor. Further details regarding the formal arrangements for the assumption of your duties will be communicated to you in due course through the appropriate channels.
Her Majesty's Government is confident that your distinguished record of service and your profound knowledge of Gibraltar and its affairs will serve the territory and the Crown with the utmost distinction during what is, as you will be well aware, a period of considerable delicacy in relations between Gibraltar, the United Kingdom and Spain.

como Gobernador y Comandante en Jefe de Gibraltar, en sucesión al General Sir
Dudley Ward, con motivo de su retiro del cargo.
Su nombramiento entrará en
vigor en la fecha que se acuerde mutuamente entre usted y el Gobernador
saliente. Los detalles relativos a los actos formales de toma de posesión de
sus funciones le serán comunicados a su debido tiempo a través de los canales correspondientes.
