Cuando finalmente dieron las doce campanadas, el maestro Soro felicitó a los presentes con un sonoro "¡Feliz año nuevo!", que fue coreado por toda la sala, y las felicitaciones, abrazos y besos se multiplicaron en plena algarabía. Mientras la orquesta volvía a entonar piezas festivas, María Serra se acercó a Charlotte y, tomándola de la mano, casi tirando de ella, la sacó al escenario y le hizo sentarse delante del fastuoso piano de cola haciendo que los Hopkins y los Smith no dejaran de aplaudir con fervor.

─ ¿Te sabes White Christmas? ─preguntó María sin rodeos.

─ ¡Por supuesto! ─respondió Charlotte con desparpajo, perdiendo todo rastro de timidez.

Y cuando se hizo el silencio, se bajaron las luces del gran salón de baile y Charlotte y María entonaron con una maestría pasmosa uno de los más bellos villancicos de la Historia. El público, absorto ante la virtuosidad del original dúo, seguía embelesado la voz de la mezzo-soprano a la que acompañaban de forma magistral las notas del afinado piano. Al terminar, se volvieron a encender las luces, que revelaron los conmovidos rostros de todos los presentes y, especialmente, el de la abuela Claire justo antes de que un estallido de aplausos pusiera el broche de oro a aquella nochevieja que siempre se recordaría en la familia.

When the clock finally struck twelve, Maestro Soro wished everyone a hearty “Happy New Year!”, which was echoed throughout the hall, and congratulations, hugs, and kisses multiplied amidst the jubilant commotion. As the orchestra resumed playing festive pieces, María Serra approached Charlotte and, taking her hand—almost tugging her along—led her onto the stage and seated her in front of the magnificent grand piano, prompting the Hopkins and the Smiths to applaud enthusiastically.

“Do you know White Christmas?” María asked bluntly.

“Of course!” Charlotte replied boldly, shedding every trace of shyness.

As silence fell, the lights of the grand ballroom dimmed, and Charlotte and María performed with astonishing mastery one of the most beautiful Christmas carols in history. The audience, captivated by the virtuosity of the original duo, remained spellbound by the mezzo-soprano’s voice, masterfully accompanied by the notes of the finely tuned piano. When they finished, the lights were restored, revealing the moved faces of everyone present, especially that of Grandma Claire, just before an outburst of applause crowned that New Year’s Eve, one that would forever be remembered in the family.
