CHAPTER 82 - BABY BOOM - CAPÍTULO 82

'What are they going to call her?' asked Grannie Claire.

'Anne,' she said. 'Anne Margot.'

'Margot,' said Margot in surprise.

No one said anything for a moment. The garden of Villa Claire smelt of the last flowers of summer and the night-blooming jasmine already sensing the absence of sunlight, and somewhere in the neighbourhood someone was pruning with shears, whose rhythmic snipping marked the silence of the evening.

'This year,' said Andrew at last, 'we've had five babies. A genuine baby boom.'

'And a wedding to come,' said Rowena, looking at Julian Archibald, asleep in the pram beside the table, guarded by his elder brother, little John P.

'And a new Smith & Imossi branch office,' said Charlotte, looking at her nephew.

'And many ships,' said Andrew.

John, who had been listening in silence with his tea in his hands, raised his eyes.

'What ships?' he said.

'The ones that can't pass through the Canal,' said Andrew. 'Last week we had two Italian ocean liners from Lloyd Triestino. This week we're expecting another.'

John looked at his son for a moment.

'And Smith & Imossi is acting as shipping agent for all of them?'

'Smith & Imossi Algeciras is acting as shipping agent for all of them,' said Andrew, with a precision that was not vanity but accuracy.

'Partida is still handling the ones they were already handling before, though they have a few more now, but practically all of them belong to Spanish shipping companies. What in July was a reasonable gamble, papa, has in barely two months become something none of us could have imagined when I proposed opening the branch office.'

************

— ¿Cómo la llamarán? —preguntó la abuela Claire.
—Anne —dijo —Anne Margot.
—Margot —dijo Margot sorprendida.
—Y muchos barcos —dijo Andrew.
