CAPÍTULO 50 - EL PRINCIPIO DEL FIN ---- CHAPTER 50 - THE BEGINNING OF THE END

 

«Es en Navidad, más que en cualquier otro momento, cuando somos conscientes de la oscura sombra de la guerra. Nuestra festividad navideña de hoy carece de muchas de las características felices y familiares que ha tenido desde nuestra infancia. Echamos de menos la presencia real de algunos de nuestros seres más queridos, sin los cuales nuestras reuniones familiares no pueden estar completas.

Pero, aunque sus celebraciones exteriores puedan ser limitadas, el mensaje de la Navidad permanece eterno e inmutable. Es un mensaje de gratitud y de esperanza: de gratitud al Todopoderoso por Sus grandes misericordias, y de esperanza por el regreso a esta tierra de la paz y la buena voluntad.

Con este espíritu deseo a todos vosotros una feliz Navidad. Este año, aumenta nuestra alegría el compartirla con tantos de nuestros camaradas de armas de los Estados Unidos de América. Les damos la bienvenida en nuestros hogares, y su estancia aquí no sólo será para nosotros un feliz recuerdo, sino, espero, una base de entendimiento duradero entre nuestros dos pueblos.

Las recientes victorias obtenidas por las naciones aliadas me permiten, esta Navidad, hablar con firme confianza sobre el futuro.

En las costas meridionales del Mediterráneo, el Primer y el Octavo Ejércitos; nuestras flotas y fuerzas aéreas avanzan para encontrarse, alentadas y enormemente reforzadas por los oportunos y poderosos ejércitos de los Estados Unidos. Golpes han sido asestados por los ejércitos de la Unión Soviética, cuyos efectos aún no pueden medirse sobre las mentes y cuerpos del pueblo alemán.

En el Pacífico contemplamos con expectación emocionada las contraofensivas de nuestros camaradas australianos y americanos.

La India, aún amenazada por la invasión japonesa, ha hallado en sus leales combatientes, más de un millón de campeones dispuestos a situarse al lado del Ejército británico en defensa del suelo indio.

Todavía tenemos tareas por delante, quizá incluso más arduas que aquellas que ya hemos cumplido. Las afrontamos con confianza, porque hoy estamos unidos, ya no solos, ya no mal armados, sino tan resueltos como en las horas más oscuras a cumplir con nuestro deber, ocurra lo que ocurra.

Muchos de vosotros a quienes me dirijo estáis muy lejos, en el extranjero. Conocéis de primera mano la importancia y el sentido de aquellos puestos avanzados del Imperio que la sabiduría de nuestros antepasados eligió, y que vuestra lealtad defenderá... Dondequiera que estéis sirviendo en nuestra amplia y libre Mancomunidad de Naciones siempre os sentiréis “como en casa” ... La Reina y yo sentimos muy profundamente por todos vosotros que habéis perdido o que habéis sido apartados de vuestros seres queridos, y nuestros corazones se dirigen a vosotros con pesar, con consuelo, pero también con orgullo. Que el mensaje de Navidad —de paz, de esperanza, de buena voluntad entre los hombres— nos inspire a seguir adelante. Que el nuevo año nos acerque a la victoria, a la paz duradera, y a la reconstrucción de un mundo más justo.”

"It is at Christmas, more than at any other time, that we are conscious of the dark shadow of war. Our Christmas festival today lacks many of the happy and familiar features it has held since our childhood. We miss the real presence of some of our dearest loved ones, without whom our family gatherings cannot be complete.

Yet, though its outward celebrations may be limited, the message of Christmas remains eternal and unchanging. It is a message of thankfulness and of hope: of thankfulness to Almighty God for His great mercies, and of hope for the return to this land of peace and goodwill.

In this spirit, I wish you all a happy Christmas. This year, our joy is increased by sharing it with so many of our comrades-in-arms from the United States of America. We welcome them into our homes, and their stay here will not only be for us a happy memory, but, I hope, a foundation for lasting understanding between our two peoples.

The recent victories gained by the Allied nations allow me, this Christmas, to speak with firm confidence about the future.

On the southern shores of the Mediterranean, the First and the Eighth Armies, our fleets and air forces press forward to meet each other, encouraged and greatly reinforced by the timely and powerful armies of the United States. Blows have been struck by the armies of the Soviet Union, the effects of which upon the minds and bodies of the German people cannot yet be measured.

In the Pacific we watch with eager expectation the counter-offensives of our Australian and American comrades.

India, still threatened by Japanese invasion, has found in its loyal fighters more than a million champions ready to stand beside the British Army in defence of Indian soil.

We still have tasks ahead of us, perhaps even more arduous than those we have already accomplished. We face them with confidence, for today we are united, no longer alone, no longer ill-armed, but as resolute as in the darkest hours to see our duty through, come what may.

Many of you to whom I speak are far away, overseas. You know first-hand the importance and meaning of those outposts of the Empire which the wisdom of our forebears chose, and which your loyalty will defend... Wherever you are serving in our wide and free Commonwealth you will always feel ‘at home’... The Queen and I feel most deeply for all of you who have lost or been parted from your loved ones, and our hearts go out to you in sorrow, in comfort, but also in pride. May the message of Christmas — of peace, of hope, of goodwill among men — inspire us to carry on. May the New Year bring us nearer to victory, to enduring peace, and to the rebuilding of a fairer world."
