- By the way, have you seen Churchill around the hotel this morning? - asked Mr Smith curiously. 

 – No, I only saw him at the session the other day and then at Claire's party, but today he hasn't turned up. He is staying at the house of our common cousin, Percileon, he told me this way he keeps  himself isolated from the atmosphere of the conference and can write more comfortably. 

  – Let's see when we can read his chronicles, his attitude has changed since we saw you last year, don't you think so? Now he looks more relaxed.

– It is normal, one thing is to be a member of the government and another thing to be a member of the press. Now, clearly, he has adopted the role of correspondent and takes it very seriously - answered the colonel - I think he always goes free, wherever he is, in the Conservative party or in the Liberal. Above all, he is a political animal and, as such, he knows how to have it both ways. I don't think his chronicles are going to be too acidic, especially because of this present position as deputy secretary for the colonies, which is still a high bureaucratic post. If I'm not mistaken, from the times I've spoken with him, I think his political ambitions will see him rise to higher government responsibilities...and I'm sure he'll end up as head of the Foreign Office or, even more so, as Prime Minister. It is really admirable.

 

 

– Por cierto ¿ha visto a Churchill por el hotel esta mañana? – preguntó Mr Smith con curiosidad.

– No, sólo le vi en la sesión del otro día y luego en la fiesta de Claire, pero hoy no se le ha visto el pelo.

 – Se está alojando en casa de nuestro primo común, Percileon, me dijo que así se aísla del ambiente de la conferencia y puede escribir con más comodidad.

– A ver cuándo podemos leer sus crónicas, su actitud ha cambiado desde que le vimos el año pasado ¿No le parece? Ahora se le ve como más relajado.

– Es normal, una cosa es ser parte del gobierno y otra cosa ser miembro de la prensa. Ahora, claramente, ha adoptado el papel de corresponsal y se lo toma muy en serio – respondió el coronel -- creo que siempre va por libre, esté donde esté, en el partido conservador o en el liberal. Por encima de todo es un animal político y, como tal, sabe nadar y guardar la ropa. No creo que sus crónicas vayan a ser demasiado ácidas, sobre todo por el cargo que ocupa de vicesecretario para las colonias, no deja de ser un alto cargo burocrático. Si no me equivoco, por las veces que he hablado con él, creo que sus ambiciones políticas le harán ascender a más altas responsabilidades de gobierno...y seguro que acaba como jefe del Foreign Office o, más aún, como Primer Ministro. Es realmente admirable.
