...Y LLEGÓ EL DÍA DE LA CONFERENCIA - ...AND THE DAY OF THE CONFERENCE ARRIVED

En el otoño de 1905, los planes para la Conferencia Internacional de Algeciras sobre Marruecos iban a trompicones. Los distintos gobiernos tardaban en alcanzar un acuerdo para su organización y Sir Arthur Nicolson, Barón de Carnock y embajador del Reino Unido en Madrid, esperaba en Gibraltar para participar de cerca en el importante evento. En cuanto recibió el telegrama del Foreign Office, se reunió con el vicecónsul británico en Algeciras, Mr James Smith, y escribió a su amigo el coronel Archibald Hopkins, via valija diplomática, con la confirmación de la celebración de la conferencia. La primera sesión sería, si no se producían cambios, a mediados de enero de 1906 aunque oficialmente algunas potencias aún estaban poniendo trabas y algunos medios de la prensa española como el ABC hablaban de que podría empezar antes, a finales de diciembre.

In the fall of 1905, plans for the Algeciras International Conference on Morocco were in fits and starts. The different governments were taking their time to reach an agreement for its organization and Sir Arthur Nicolson, Baron Carnock and ambassador of the United Kingdom in Madrid, was waiting in Gibraltar to participate closely in the important event. As soon as he received the telegram from the Foreign Office, he met with the British Vice Consul in Algeciras, Mr James Smith, and wrote to his friend Colonel Archibald Hopkins, via diplomatic bag, confirming that the conference was to take place. The first session would be, if there were no changes, in mid-January 1906, although possibly some powers were still in the way and some media in the Spanish press such as ABC informed that it could start earlier, at the end of December.
